Before you convert
Exact mode embeds a raster image; it does not produce editable vector paths. Tracing can change fine detail.
Choose between an SVG wrapper and vector tracing
A PNG is a grid of pixels. Saving it with an SVG extension does not automatically turn its edges into mathematical curves. This PNG to SVG converter offers two different approaches: embed the raster artwork in an SVG document, or trace the artwork into paths.
Exact / embedded image mode is useful when an application requires an SVG container but you want to retain the raster appearance. Vector colors and Black & White modes reinterpret the image as shapes. They are better suited to flat artwork than photographs, and should be checked at the size where you plan to use the result.
Useful situations
- Package an existing image for a workflow that accepts SVG files, without claiming the artwork has become resolution-independent.
- Trace a simple, high-contrast logo or icon when the original vector source is unavailable.
- Create a monochrome silhouette from artwork with clearly separated foreground and background.
How to use PNG to SVG
- Select a PNG, JPG, or WebP within the file-size limit shown above. Prefer a sharp source with clean edges for tracing.
- Choose Exact / embedded image for a raster wrapper, Vector colors for colored shapes, or Black & White for a silhouette.
- Convert the file, inspect small details and transparent edges, then download the SVG. Keep the source image for comparison.
What to expect
- Embedded artwork still has a fixed source resolution. Enlarging the SVG can reveal the original pixels.
- Tracing may simplify corners, remove subtle shading, change colors, or create many paths. More paths do not necessarily mean a more useful result.
- An SVG wrapper can be larger than the original image because embedded image data adds encoding overhead.
Frequently asked questions
Will converting PNG to SVG make every part editable?
Only tracing produces paths that a vector editor may let you edit. Exact mode keeps an image inside the SVG; it does not separate text, shapes, or objects.
Which PNG files work best for vector tracing?
Flat artwork with distinct colors, clean outlines, and little texture is a good starting point. Gradients, noisy scans, and photographs are harder to represent with a small set of paths.
Can I recolor an exact-mode SVG with the customization tool?
Not as vector paths. The artwork is an embedded image, and the customization studio removes image elements as part of its restrictive safety policy. Use a raster editor or choose tracing if editable shapes are the goal.
