Before you convert
Embedding preserves the raster appearance, not vector editability. Tracing photographs may simplify colors and detail.
What happens when a photograph becomes an SVG?
JPEG is designed for raster images such as photographs. An SVG document can contain that kind of image, but it can also contain vector shapes. The distinction matters more than the extension: wrapping a JPEG preserves a raster representation, while tracing approximates its appearance with paths.
For a detailed photograph, start with Exact / embedded image. For a flat illustration saved as JPEG, try Vector colors and compare the edges carefully. JPEG compression can introduce blocks or halos that tracing may interpret as additional shapes.
Useful situations
- Place a photo in an SVG-based layout when a downstream application requires that file type.
- Experiment with a posterized vector treatment of a simple JPEG illustration.
- Make a black-and-white silhouette from a high-contrast JPEG source.
How to use JPG to SVG
- Choose a JPG or JPEG file within the displayed upload limit. If you have an original PNG or vector file, consider using that source instead.
- Select the embedded-image mode for a raster representation, or choose a tracing mode when you intentionally want paths.
- Run the conversion and compare faces, lettering, gradients, and small edges before downloading the SVG.
What to expect
- Neither embedding nor tracing restores details already discarded by JPEG compression.
- A photograph traced into paths can become visually simpler and much larger. It is not a substitute for the original photograph.
- An embedded photo remains pixel-based when enlarged and is not directly recolorable as individual vector objects.
Frequently asked questions
Can JPG to SVG recover the original vector logo?
No. Tracing estimates shapes from the available pixels; it cannot recover the exact curves, font information, or layer structure of a lost source file.
Why does a traced JPEG have extra shapes around letters?
Compression halos and edge noise can become part of the trace. A cleaner, higher-resolution source or a simpler monochrome treatment may be more suitable.
Does an embedded JPG become sharper when its SVG is enlarged?
No. The wrapper does not create additional image detail. Use a larger source image or obtain the original vector artwork when sharp scaling is required.
