Shape the document before decorating it
Start by extracting or deleting pages so the document contains only the content you want. Merge files after their order is decided, then rotate pages that display sideways.
Adding watermarks or page numbers too early can create extra work if the document later changes. Apply visual labels after the final page order is known, then compress near the end.
Use page ranges carefully
Split, delete, rotate, and replace operations rely on 1-based page numbers. A range such as 2-5 includes pages two through five, while comma-separated selections can include nonconsecutive pages.
When preparing a document for others, verify whether the displayed page number in a reader matches the physical PDF page index. Cover pages and roman-numbered front matter can shift the numbering you need to enter.
Overlays and compression are not security controls
A watermark or page number is a visual layer and does not make the PDF private or tamper-proof. Text replacement works only where a real text layer exists and does not provide redaction for hidden metadata or images.
Compression can reduce embedded image quality and may not shrink a text-only PDF. Keep the original when signatures, forms, legal validity, or future edits matter.
- Extract or delete unwanted pages first.
- Merge in final reading order and rotate pages next.
- Apply text corrections, numbering, and watermarks after structure is settled.
- Compress last and compare readability, signatures, and file size.
